Juke redefining music’s social experience

Juke is much more than just a music app. It redefines the interaction between fans and artists by placing the social experience of live music at the heart of its concept.

Not only does Juke allow users to listen to music, but it also offers them the opportunity to participate and watch live broadcasts of concerts by their favorite artists, shared by other users present at the venue. This unique feature creates a social and interactive environment where fans can experience concerts remotely through the perspectives of on-site spectators who are Juke users. Additionally, they have the possibility to interact directly with the artists, if chosen, and access exclusive broadcasts, thereby strengthening the sense of community. By fostering direct interactions not only among fans themselves but also between fans and artists, Juke elevates the social aspect

  • Participated in technical discussions to ensure seamless integration of the design into the final product.

Challenges

Anticipating user needs without an existing product

One of the main challenges was defining user needs without a tangible product or real feedback. To address this, we relied on preliminary research, personas, and usage scenarios based on current trends in music and entertainment. Journey maps and innovative interaction scenarios helped lay a solid foundation for Juke’s development.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration to ensure technical feasibility

Managing multi-angle video streams and real-time interactions posed technical challenges. We collaborated closely with developers to ensure the UI design met technical requirements while delivering an optimal user experience, helping to anticipate issues like latency, camera transitions, and interaction fluidity.

Creating a unique and immersive experience

Juke seeks to create an immersive universe for each artist through the Artist’s World feature, allowing fans to explore 3D discographies and interact with symbolic objects. The challenge was to design this world with visual coherence and intuitive navigation, while offering a unique immersive experience.

Increasing artists’ revenue

One of the major challenges was finding innovative ways for artists to monetize their interactions with fans beyond traditional concerts. In addition to ticket sales, incorporating features such as live backstage access, private interviews, and exclusive content for the most engaged fans was part of a strategy to incentivize artists to use the Juke app.

This approach not only aimed to offer a unique experience for fans but also to generate additional revenue streams for artists, making Juke an essential platform for their engagement and growth. Furthermore, each artist would be encouraged to get their fans actively using Juke, enhancing the community aspect and driving more users to the platform.

Process & Solutions

Empathy: understanding users

User Interviews

We interviewed music listeners to understand how they consume music on existing platforms, what frustrates them (such as the lack of interaction with artists during a concert or the difficulty of accessing exclusive content like backstage moments or off-stage interactions), and what they would like to see in a music-focused platform.

Additionally, we conducted interviews with artists to gather their perspective on fan engagement during live performances. Many expressed the need for better tools to create more personal connections with fans, especially in large venues where the interaction often feels distant or impersonal.

User personas

Based on these interviews, we created representative personas, such as Léo, an independent musician seeking to interact with his fans, and Julie,  a regular attendee of concerts and a frequent user of music streaming platforms. These personas guided the design process, allowing us to develop solutions that meet real user needs.

Empathy maps

We also used empathy maps to explore what users see, hear, think, and feel when using existing music applications. This helped us identify major pain points and differentiation opportunities for Juke.

The first step was to deeply understand the expectations and frustrations of the target users, namely music listeners and artists. However, given the difficulty of accessing well-known artists, we interviewed a diverse panel, including:

An unknown artist,

A mid-level artist,

An artist with a larger audience.

This approach allowed us to gather varied feedback and better understand the needs of different segments of artists.

Benchmarking: analyzing competitor platforms

Before defining the problems, we conducted an in-depth benchmark of music streaming platforms and social networks (like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music) to identify:

The strengths and weaknesses of existing platforms,

Gaps in terms of artist-fan interaction, particularly for live experiences.

This benchmark allowed us to identify several innovation opportunities for Juke, especially in real-time interactions and immersive features that these platforms do not yet offer.

The next step was to synthesize the information gathered during the interviews and benchmarking to create a clear problem statement that guided product development:

Defining: framing the problem

Problem statement

Fans and artists lack a dedicated platform where they can engage with each other during live concerts in an authentic and immersive way. Most existing applications are generalist platforms, which dilute the concert experience, and others don’t allow real-time interaction between artists and their fans.

This highlighted the need for Juke to provide a fully immersive and interactive experience that allows fans and artists to connect genuinely during live performances.

The development of Juke followed a structured process to tackle the challenges of building an immersive, interactive music platform. It began with understanding user needs through research, followed by benchmarking competitors to identify gaps. We then generated solutions through brainstorming and refined prototypes with usability testing.

Process & Solutions

Process

Collaborative use of the Project Canvas

We started by fully utilizing the Project Canvas as a team. This tool allowed us to map out the key objectives of the project, such as integrating AI and gamification to promote sustainability. By visualizing each component together, we ensured a common understanding among all stakeholders and established a clear roadmap for developing this new application.

Project initiation

Precise definition of objectives and constraints

We established SMART goals. For example, aiming to increase user engagement by 30% within the first six months post-launch through gamification features. We identified current budgetary and technical constraints, including challenges related to banking security and AI integration, and planned solutions to overcome them.

Team creation of detailed personas

We conducted surveys, in-depth interviews, and direct observations to gather rich data. This allowed us to develop representative personas, such as Arthur C., 29 years old, an environmentally conscious architect who wants a banking app aligned with his ecological values and offering AI features for better financial management.

User research

Synthesis with the UCD Canvas

We synthesized the information in the UCD Canvas to draw deep insights into the motivations and frustrations of potential users. These insights revealed needs such as visualizing the environmental impact of transactions and the desire for rewards for sustainable behaviors, thereby guiding our design towards truly user-centered solutions.

Collaborative documentation of hypotheses

We recorded UX hypotheses such as “Users will increase their use of the app if gamification elements are integrated.” Each hypothesis was associated with measurable validation criteria, such as retention rate or number of daily interactions, for precise evaluation during future tests.

Formulation and validation of UX hypotheses methodologies

Process

During several brainstorming sessions, we explored creative solutions to solve this problem innovatively. We used techniques like Crazy 8 (to quickly generate a large number of ideas) and mind mapping to explore all possible avenues. Here are some of the key ideas that emerged and set Juke apart from other platforms:

Ideation: generating innovative solutions

Fan spotlight

Artists could select a fan during a live broadcast to invite them to an exclusive and public interaction. Unlike a simple chat, this feature would allow the selected fans to appear on-screen live with the artist, in front of the entire community. This direct and visible interaction makes the experience unique, strengthening the connection between the artist and their fans. It’s a way to create memorable moments and encourage active participation during live broadcasts.

Multi-angle concert experience

Juke could introduce a feature where fans attending a concert can live stream and share their perspectives with the community. Remote viewers would have the ability to connect to these streams and switch between different Juke users in the venue, who are also live streaming. This would offer an immersive multi-angle view, allowing concertgoers and remote viewers to experience the concert from various perspectives throughout the venue.

Additionally, the artist would have a professional multi-angle camera system, providing a higher quality stream. This multi-angle broadcast would be available only for a limited time to encourage fans to attend the concert in person and buy tickets. For those who missed the artist’s live stream, they would still have the option to watch it.

Real-time voting for songs

Juke could integrate a feature where fans influence the concert by voting in real-time for the songs the artist should play. During a live performance, the artist would propose a selection of songs, and fans using the app could vote for their preferences. This would make each concert unique, interactive, and directly influenced by the artist’s community.

Live backstage access

Before or after a concert, artists could broadcast exclusive backstage moments directly on Juke. This content, available only to those connected live, would offer an intimate and privileged dimension that other platforms cannot provide as specifically. It could include Q&A sessions, rehearsals, or informal moments with the band, creating an even more personal connection.

Merchandising based on fan content

Another idea would be to allow users to create visual content (screenshots, videos, or photos of concerts broadcast via Juke) that could be turned into official merchandise. Fans could submit their creations, and artists could select their favorites to transform into posters, t-shirts, or other items for sale during the concert. This would empower the community creatively while offering additional revenue opportunities for the artist.

Total immersion in the artist’s universe

Instead of a simple profile page, Juke could allow artists to create an immersive universe around their music. Fans could enter a virtual environment where they can discover interactive elements, such as exploring the discography in 3D, accessing exclusive performances, or interacting with symbolic objects related to the artist (like iconic locations or symbolic items from their albums). This would offer total immersion and differentiate Juke from other platforms where profiles are static.

Virtual Meet & Greet

Juke could introduce virtual meet & greet sessions where a group of fans could ask the artist questions live after a concert or during a special event. Unlike traditional in-person meet & greets, this virtual version would allow a larger number of fans to experience this exclusive moment with their favorite artist.

Rewards for top fan streamers

To encourage fans to share their live concert experiences, Juke implements a reward system for users who frequently stream concerts through the app. These fans enrich the community by offering diverse perspectives and enhancing the remote viewing experience.

Possible rewards include:

EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISE

Limited-edition items from their favorite artists.

PRIORITY ACCESS

Early opportunities to purchase tickets for upcoming events.

IN-APP RECOGNITION

Special badges or featured profiles to acknowledge their contributions.

EXCLUSIVE INTERACTIONS

Access to private chats or virtual meet & greets with artists.

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

Early access to new songs, albums, or behind-the-scenes footage.

INCENTIVES FOR TICKET SALES

If a remote viewer buys a ticket through a streamer’s broadcast, the streamer receives additional rewards like commission points, enhanced recognition, or access to exclusive events.

This reward system not only motivates fans to share engaging content but also encourages them to actively promote concerts. By acknowledging streamers who help generate ticket sales, Juke fosters a collaborative ecosystem where fans play a direct role in the success of their favorite artists, strengthening the community as a whole.

We turned these ideas into interactive prototypes in collaboration with the UX/UI design team.

Prototyping: turning ideas into tangible solutions

Wireframes & mockups

We designed low-fidelity wireframes to map the user flow around the main features, such as navigating between different live broadcast angles and interactions between fans and artists. These wireframes were then transformed into high-fidelity prototypes.

Interactive prototypes

We created interactive prototypes that simulated the user experience. Users could interact with the main features, such as viewing concerts from multiple angles, social interactions between fans, and receiving real-time notifications.

Although we couldn’t test with very well-known artists, we conducted tests with artists of different levels (unknown, mid-level, and well-established) and with fans to validate the prototypes and refine the experience.

User testing: validating and refining

Usability testing

Users tested key features such as camera control, live interactions with artists, and social interactions between fans. The tests revealed friction points that we adjusted to improve the interface’s fluidity.

Iterative design

Following feedback from the tests, we adjusted navigation, improved button clarity, and optimized social interactions between users to strengthen community engagement.
